Have you ever wondered what happens when we die? Or where we get our ideas about the Lake of Fire, or the Devil as a red guy with pointy horns and a pitchfork? Have you ever thought about if heaven really has pearly gates or streets of gold? If you have ever asked questions like these, join KUMC for our October worship series unpacking what our ideas about Heaven, Hell, and the afterlife. This October we will discover together what Jesus has to say about eternal life, separation from God, and the power of love in the face of death.

World Communion Day

What does a celebration of God’s world-wide, diverse Church look like? How can we celebrate Christ’s way of living that isn’t just experienced in STL or America, but throughout God’s creation? Join the celebration of Jesus’s global Church!
At Kirkwood United Methodist our vision is to share Christ’s radically inclusive love with the seekers, the cynics, the flawed, and the faithful. During this worship series we’ll look at the way Jesus’s love was truly radical in the way it crossed boundaries to reach every kind of person.

Resting in God

Here we see in the busyness of successful ministry Jesus disappears to a quiet place to pray. Even though people are looking for him, Jesus draws clear boundaries and makes time alone with the divine a priority. This sermon will explore how we can follow Christ’s example and set rhythms of silence and solitude even in our busy modern lives.

Outsiders  Creating new places for new people is at the heart of our mission as we seek to follow Christ’s command to “go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19-20). Christ is always urging us to spread the love of God, and this means we have to be willing to make space for new people.
So what are new places the Spirit of God is calling us to create both inside and outside the church to develop relationships with new people? How does scripture guide us? How is God seeking to do something radical and new in our very midst? Explore these questions and others as we consider how God is leading us to create new places for new people in our August Sermon Series!

Messy Church

In the beginning, God reached into the muck and formed us. What does this say about God’s willingness to be in the mess? If we are formed from the dirt and God calls that good, why do we strive so hard to be perfect/clean/pure? This sermon series will introduce the idea that we aren’t called to be perfect, but we are called to be messy. God doesn’t wait for us to be clean, but meets us right there in the mess.

Kingdom Dreams

Throughout scripture, God stirred hearts and minds to envision a new future. These visions and dreams, beckoned people to reimagine their current realities and called them to active participation in transforming lives and communities. Like the prophets that came before us, we are called to dream new dreams and partner with God to create a new future — not just for ourselves or for our church — but for the whole world.

Holy Doubt

Have you ever felt unsure? Do you struggle with big questions about God that don’t seem to have answers? You are not alone. People of faith have been wrestling with doubts and questions since the very beginning. What if doubt weren’t the opposite of faith, but a way to discover more of God? What if our questions could lead us into deeper faith?

Draw Near

Through the birth of Christ, God draws near to us by taking on flesh and experiencing what it is to be human. This season, we celebrate that God is still incarnate drawing ever closer to us and to the spaces in the world that are broken. Advent is a season where we respond to God’s nearness by drawing near to God. We practice Drawing Near by leaning into wonder, justice, truth, and one another.

Table Manners
In our busy lives, we don’t make a lot of time to invite friends and neighbors and certainly not strangers over for dinner. But that is exactly how Jesus spent much of his ministry: around a table sharing food and stories with every kind of person. In this series we will join Jesus at the table and see what table manners we can learn from the man who broke all the rules.

September Sermon Series:

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Jesus boiled down the whole of the gospel into just a few simple commandments: love the Lord and love your neighbor. Sounds easy, but sometimes it is more challenging than it seems. Who exactly is our neighbor? And what does loving them look like in the real world? This month we will be learning together the practical ways that God calls us to engage others, and how simple acts of love can change our lives, our church, our communities, and our world.

But what if Jesus is closer than we ever imagined? Join us for this worship series as we explore together how to encounter Jesus in the messy circumstances of our real lives.
