Our Core Beliefs

At this place, we like to say that “all are welcome, all are forgiven, and all are invited to believe.”  And we mean it.  Kirkwood UMC is part of the United Methodist Church, a movement that claims 12 million members around the world; and we proudly welcome you, regardless of your race, color, national origin, or sexual orientation.  We invite you to worship passionately with us, receive Holy Communion, be baptized, and be admitted into membership. We believe that no matter where you have been, what you have done, if you are new to the faith, a seeker or a returner, God loves you and seeks to be in a relationship with you.  Period.
United Methodist preaching and teaching are grounded in scripture, informed by Christian tradition, enlivened by personal experience, and tested by reason.   We derive that value from our founder, John Wesley, whose theology on grace shapes all that we are and do.  Wesley taught us salvation, our invitation into an eternal relationship with God, through the Son, Jesus Christ, is a gift.  We don’t deserve it, and cannot earn it … it is prevenient, meaning it was there for us before we ever knew we needed or wanted it, as we fall and fail along the way.
As with Christians of other protestant traditions, we believe in the trinity.  We understand a triune God who is one in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  If you have a little trouble getting your head around that, it’s ok.  One of our most important beliefs is that we don’t claim to have all the answers or have a corner on the truth.  But we are in faithful pursuit of those ideals every weekend and wherever we witness in the name of the God of the universe.
To that end, we believe that the heart of Christian ministry is outwardly focused love.  We are called to minister wherever Christ would have us serve and to witness in deeds and words that heal and free.  Please join us on the journey.  The world is yearning for our message of love and grace!
